Cheorwon DMZ Tour
DMZ Course: The 2nd Tunnel – Peace Observatory – Crane Exhibit – Korean Workers’ Party Headquarters
The 2nd Tunnel: The tunnel dug by the North Korean army was discovered in 1975. With a height and width of 2 meters each, up to 30,000 soldiers could pass through in one hour in addition to tanks. Inside the cave is a large holding chamber where the troops could gather, with the path splitting into three exits. You may also take a picture with soldiers on the entrance of the tunnel.
Cheorwon Peace Observatory: It offers a view of the towns and lands of North Korea. In front of the observatory, you can see a unique shaped ‘tree of peace’ and an actual tank used during the Korean War. You can easily gain access to the top of the observatory by taking the monorail that can carry up to 50 people per trip. Have in mind that you are not allowed to take photos towards the military installations. The floor below the observation deck features a permanent exhibition displaying photographs of The Second Tunnel, soldiers’ barracks, and checkpoints along the DMZ.
Crane Exhibit: Cheorwon is a popular stop for international birdwatchers, as the open fields and spaces north of the boarder provide the perfect space for watching migratory birds in a natural, protected habitat. At the third floor of the exhibit, you can find the crane gallery, where you can see 50 to 90 taxidermy birds.
Korean Workers’ Party Headquarters: This three-story building was constructed in 1946 in the Russian style since North Korea had strong ties with the Soviet Union. However, only its outer walls remains from the Korean War. It was used as the headquarters of the Labor Party until the break of the Korean War. North Korean government exercised several brutal activities subjected to people around Cheorwon and other nearby areas. At the dugout behind the building, many skeletons, bullets and ropes were found.
